Thorough preparation is key to the success of your presentation.
You should always make sure that you fully understand the aims and objectives of the presentation brief, to ensure that you remain on subject and do not stray from the point.
A good presenter will always research the subject thoroughly before putting pen to paper.
You should also consider the format of your presentation carefully; i.e. PowerPoint may look flashy, but a flip chart gives you the ability to adapt your presentation / visual aids as you are speaking. Also, you should check what facilities will be available on the day.
- Ensure you fully understand the aims and objectives of the presentation i.e. what is the client looking to learn from your speech
- Research the company/product/subject carefully and thoroughly
- Don't stray from the point
- Choose the best media for your subject and audience e.g. PowerPoint, flip chart, OHP, hand-outs etc
- Check what facilities / technologies are available
- If using a laptop, make sure you have a full battery, and that the presentation is backed-up onto CD/USB memory stick in case you have to use the client's equipment
- Practice in front of a friend, family member or colleague to check length, understanding and clarity
- Try to anticipate possible questions, and prepare answers in advance
